If you are a little fanatical about food, Round-The-World Trip Inspiration For Fanatic Food Lovers Articles where and what you will be eating while you are on your round-the-world trip may be a major consideration as you plan. From my experience, there really is nothing like trying out delicious new dishes authentically prepared to connect you to a destination sushi.

So if you are in need of some foodie inspiration, I’ve got four places for you to consider. Beyond the flight reservations, accommodation bookings and annual travel insurance purchase, this is the fun part of travel!

Greece

Not only is Greece one of the most visually stunning places in the world, the food is also off the charts. Think olive oil, feta cheese, Kalamata olives, all produced locally and served with colourful salads and roasted meats that will make your mouth water.

Some local dishes popular in Greece include spanakopita – a delicate pastry filled with spinach and feta cheese; gyros – carved roast meat with tzatziki sauce in a pita; souvlaki – seasoned chicken or lamb skewers; and homemade moussaka – a kind of Greek lasagne but made with eggplant, ground beef or lamb and that oh-so-creamy béchamel sauce.

Mexico

Each of Mexico’s seven states has its own cuisine specialties, from the chocolate mole sauce of Oaxaca to the Mayan food of the Yucatán that features spicy habaneros and fresh salsas made from tamarind, plums, avocados and bitter oranges. Along the North Pacific coast, Guadalajara, the region’s gastronomic centre is known for birria, a dish made from stewed beef, mutton or pork with chilli peppers and spices.

Mexico City is a foodie’s Mecca all in its own right, from five-star restaurants to street fare where you can experience authentic Mexican tacos stuffed with seasoned meat, rice, beans and peppers. And don’t forget locally-produced tequila and mescal to finish a meal off right!

Japan

If you are a sushi lover you are going to want to make a stop in Japan to sample probably the freshest sushi and sashimi you have ever eaten. Go authentic by searching for unique places where the locals eat to pay half the price for the same tasty dishes. Alternatively, take a seat at a revolving sushi conveyor to feast on all the sushi you can eat! If raw fish is not your thing, you will want to try the simple but tasty miso soup or anything tempura.

India

For the spice lover, India is an easy choice. Known for its delicious curries, spices and flavourful sauces, India makes everything taste amazing. Food specialties vary by region, with coastal Goa being popular for seafood, with added coconut and hot spices for flavour. A few popular dishes from that region include vindaloo (curry dish), Goan fish curry and Khatkhate (vegetable stew).

If you are a vegetarian you are going to enjoy the variety and consistently good-tasting veggie fare of India, as most of the country also enjoys a vegetarian diet. Dal, a lentil stew eaten with rice and naan bread, and dosa, a pancake filled with cheese or spicy vegetables will be among your choices. And don’t forget a daily cup of chai, a popular hot drink that is both spicy and flavorful and enjoyed in place of coffee or black tea.
